It sounds like it might be a write cycle timing violation to me.  If you are bit-banging and toggling the ~WR signal without a delay, the "Write Cycle" minimum timing of 66 ns would likely be violated.  Perhaps a command requires the full Write Cycle time and so the delay after the command just lets the controller catch up before you start throwing the data at it.  Otherwise, it is running behind and so it periodically overflows the buffer while sending the data.

I'm currently using the touchscreen with voltage from a Li-Ion cell (3V - 4.2V)(VBAT).  Seems to be working fine.  I just have my ADC referenced to GND and VBAT so it simply measures the touchscreen output as a ratio of VBAT.  The only variance from what marcelocrr said is that my readings only range from about 0.3V (probably due to the input buffer offset) and about 0.6VBAT (not sure why this isn't full range).

Is there any way to freeze the display while I update the display memory?  Due to the relatively low speed of writing the display memory, the display updates are not a crisp as I would like.  If I can freeze the current display, update the memory, and then unfreeze it to instantly apply the new display data, it would look much, much better.  Anyone know of a way to do this? I'm using the 8080-II 8-bit interface.
